How to resolve temperature crossing (cross-flow) caused by failed backflow preventers

AQUAMASSAGE® MAINTENANCE for Backflow Preventers

Cleaning or replacing the check valves (Backflow preventers) Issues with water cross-flow (hot water entering the cold line or vice-versa) or a total loss of pressure are often caused by debris trapped in the plastic backflow preventers or the valves becoming seized due to mineral buildup. We recommend inspecting and cleaning these components by following the instructions below.

  1. Shut off the main water line of the house to prevent any leaks during disassembly.

  2. Remove the shower column from the wall by lifting it upward approximately 2 inches (5cm) to unhook it from the mounting brackets. This will give you access to the rear plumbing.

  3. Disconnect the stainless steel flexible supply hoses from the brass faucet body on the back of the column.

  4. Locate the plastic backflow preventers. These are inserted directly into the water inlets of the brass faucet or housed within the hose connections.

  5. Inspect and Clean:

    • Use a flat screwdriver or a metal hook to gently pull out the plastic check valves.

    • Rinse them under high-pressure water to remove grit or solder debris.

    • Press the centre spring of the valve to ensure it moves freely. If it is stuck or the plastic housing is cracked, it must be replaced.

  6. Flush the Lines: While the hoses are disconnected, briefly turn on the house's main water line for 5 seconds to ensure any remaining debris is flushed out of the wall pipes.

  7. Reinstall the components. Ensure the backflow preventers are seated in the correct direction (allowing water to flow into the faucet). Reconnect the supply hoses, ensuring there are no kinks or twists.

  8. Mount the column back on the wall and turn the water back on to test the temperature and pressure.

Damaged or Seized Backflow Preventers

If the plastic internal components are warped or the spring mechanism no longer functions after cleaning, a replacement is necessary to prevent temperature fluctuations and protect your plumbing system.
